Remembering King Harald V of Norway: Champion for science

The Kavli Foundation, and our partners, are deeply saddened by the passing of his Majesty King Harald. At this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Queen Sonja, King Haakon VIII and the entire royal family. We also extend our condolences and deepest sympathies to the people of Norway.

His Majesty was a champion of The Kavli Prize from the beginning, and his love for The Prize, and desire to celebrate science for the benefit of humanity will continue to be a guiding light for us into the future.

When Fred Kavli set forth the lofty mission of advancing basic science for the benefit of humanity, a prize, given in Norway to honor scientific accomplishment in his native country was core to his goal. His Majesty shared that vision, and over the years a deep connection grew between these two men.” Said Cynthia Friend, President of The Kavli Foundation, “Fred preceded his Majesty in passing, and we are grateful to have the chance to sustain a small part of their shared legacy.”

This loss is made all the more acute as laureates, scientists and collaborators from around the world gather in Oslo for the 2026 Kavli Prize Week, an event that was close to his Majesty’s heart.

Out of this effort to honor the most outstanding scientific achievement, a rich personal friendship also grew between His Majesty and our founder, Fred Kavli. Since Fred’s passing in 2013, King Harald has been a sustaining champion of the original vision for The Kavli Prize. The foundation fondly remembers his personal presence throughout the years and his efforts to celebrate and honor The Kavli Prize Laureates. We hope to continue to honor King Harald and Mr. Kavli through our strong partnership with Norway through The Kavli Prize.
