Convenings
As a funder of early-stage science, the foundation is interested in learning about and doing more work on how to better engage publics earlier in the discovery process, empower scientists to navigate these complex areas, and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration in considering potential implications of research. To this end, we convene experts from different disciplines – scientists, ethicists, public engagement practitioners and more – to explore ways to engage publics in societal and ethical issues born from scientific discovery.
Ethics and Public Engagement of Scientific Discoveries
In April 2024, the foundation hosted an in-person workshop with international participants from diverse backgrounds to deliberate on the nuances of public engagement with ethical considerations in discovery science. Attendees represented disciplines including social scientists, natural and bench scientists, ethicists, engagement and communication practitioners, academic leaders and funding entities. Participants discussed advancements in public engagement scholarship, uncovered obstacles and opportunities, and fostered broader and deeper connectivity among leaders working to proactively engage publics in discussions.
